Course Description
This seminar class will examine current art practice on the internet and study internet culture in general. The course will examine the history of internet art and look at emerging ways in which artists are exploring new technologies. Students will look at topics such as interactive art, animation, blogging, flash mobs and emergent behavior in online gaming, locative media, hacking and hactivism, data visualization, and generative software.
Overview
This course will engage students in a discussion about the internet and the way in which artists are using it. Classes will be organized thematically as we take up topics that relate to different works and projects. Students will be expected to look through links provided before each class and come prepared to discuss work each week. We will discuss writings and issues that relate to the work and to digital culture in general. Students will be expected to write responses to work on a class blog and prepare a presentation on a topic of their own choosing. Student presentations will take place throughout the term.
