The Origins of net.art

This class will look the history of how artists have used new communication technologies and specifically at how artists’ responded to the development of the internet in the 1990’s. We will look at conceptual art and mail art as precedents to net.art and we will also look at the CD-ROM platform as a transitional interactive medium. We will attempt define some of the distinctive features of net.art and ask what kind of artworld is emerging in this virtual space.

 

READINGS: “What is New Media?” from The Language of New Media by Lev Manovich and "From Participation to Interaction: Towards the Origins of Interactive Art" by Søke Dinkla.

Today we will be examining a number of artist's CD-ROMs in class
